With the ones we had, the 366 was the better engine. 427's had more problems, took a couple out, replaced them with 366's. 427 is apparently basically the same engine, just bored out. The thinner cylinder walls had cracking issues at times.It's a dirt cheap oil that puts a lot of high dollar synthetic HDEOs to shame. The larger 454 big blocks cannot beat up 8 quarts of that oil being run at 4000rpm all day long in marine applications over a 150 hour OCI. Your smaller 366 big block will not in your use. So don't worry about sump capacity or a huge filter.The 366 was a good rental truck engine, but if you had to have a gasser, the 427 was a much better choice. They started using the 'Vortec' 454 instead of the old 366 and 427 starting in 1998 or so, and those pump out about 270 h.p. in medium duty trim, which ain't bad for a gasser.
